Speaking to Sky Sports after beating Derby County in the Championship play-off final yesterday, Jack Grealish discussed who might be the bargain signing of the season. The players that the midfield playmaker mentioned might have Celtic fans scratching their heads.
“When he first came I didn’t even know who he was. But that’s why he’s got player of the season for Villa, man of the match today, scored, it just says everything about the lad. I can’t praise him enough. For £2.5m – bargain of the season. Him or (Norwich striker Teemu Pukki) – I don’t know which one!”
One of the players mentioned was a midfielder Celtic tried to sign last summer, whilst the other is a Celtic flop.
The two players in question are John McGinn and Teemu Pukki.
Last summer, Aston Villa signed John McGinn from Hibernian for a fee in the region of £2.75 million. Celtic had also been interested in the Scotland international. As reported by The Scottish Sun, the Bhoys had three bids rejected for the player this summer but the Edinburgh club valued him at £4 million if selling to a Scottish rival. Celtic, therefore missed out.

McGinn has gone on to be pivotal for Aston Villa this season. His form saw him named the club’s player of the season and helped Villa to their play-off success.
Norwich City signed Pukki on a free transfer after his contract at Brondby expired. Celtic once hoped Pukki could replace Gary Hooper in attack but the Finland international managed just nine goals in 37 games for Celtic.
This season, he has scored 30 goals in 46 games as Norwich won the Championship and returned to the Premier League.
Celtic fans have plenty to celebrate after completing the treble treble. But imagine how good they could have been with these two bargains in their ranks.
