Jack Grealish and John Terry react on Instagram as Aston Villa confirm exit
Bjorn Engels has left Aston Villa on a free transfer after two seasons at the club to return to his home country – and sign for Royal Antwerp. The centre-back failed to make a single appearance for Villa during the 2020-21 campaign. Jack Grealish and John Terry reacted to Engels leaving Villa.
Engels, 26, joined Villa in 2019 from French side Stade Reims but only managed 19 outings in his first season at Villa Park. The combination of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa at centre-back has seen Engels fall down the pecking order. Last term, he failed to play even a single minute.
That is, despite being in the matchday squad for 23 of Villa’s 38 Premier League matches in 2020-21. Clearly, Dean Smith preferred to be tactically consistent and with Engels seeing his contract expire on June 30, he has departed. He described playing for Villa as a “dream come true”.
What have Grealish and Terry said about Engels leaving Villa?
A really impressive signing when he first joined the club, Engels failed to live up to the hype in his initial run of matches. He was given the chance to start above Konsa alongside Mings, but he failed to do enough to rubber stamp his place as the long-term partner of Mings. Konsa is immense.
The ex-Brentford man has starred since coming into the side and many have suggested that he should have been in this summer’s Euro 2020 side. After his initial post to Villa fans, he also posted on Instagram in the red of new side Antwerp – and both Terry and Grealish sent him messages.
