Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of completing their first deal of the summer. Leeds United’s talented winger Jack Clarke is set to join the club. As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post,  the wideman underwent a medical at the club yesterday. The deal is said to be worth around £10 million.

It is great news for Spurs and the player, who is an undoubtedly gifted wide-man who could go on to thrive at Tottenham Hotspur.

However, for another naturally gifted wide operator, it is not good news. Clarke’s arrival is surely the final nail in the coffin of Marcus Edwards’ flagging Tottenham career.

Edwards burst onto the scene for Tottenham back in 2016. As reported by Sky Sports, he was likened to Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino. However, that comment acted more like a curse than a blessing for the player.

Edwards struggled to breakthrough at Tottenham and suffered a poor loan spell at Norwich City in 2017-18.

Last summer, as reported by The Guardian, Edwards wanted a a permanent exit from Spurs. However, ended up on loan with Dutch side Excelsior.

His spell in the Netherlands was developmental but hardly spectacular. Edwards scored three goals and provided five assists in 33 games for the Rotterdam club, who eventually suffered relegation from the Eredivisie.

Now 20-years-old, Edwards’ pathway to the first-team at Tottenham is set to be blocked even more by Clarke, two years his younger.

Edwards should find himself a new home this summer where he might finally be able to polish some of that Messi-like talent he possesses.
