Tottenham Hotspur fans have said that it is embarrassing that they were demanding such a hefty fee for Harry Winks.

Big asking price

The Times claim that Tottenham wanted £40 million for Winks over the summer, despite his languishing form for them over the past year.

Aston Villa and Everton both showed an interest in signing the former England international, who is on a £50,000-a-week contract (Spotrac).

However, they were put off by Tottenham’s exorbitant demands.

And Spurs fans certainly feel that the club simply priced themselves out of a sale.

What was the logic?

Quite why Tottenham did place such a high asking price on Winks is unclear.

He has barely played under Nuno so far, and seems to have slipped further down the pecking order, so his value is unlikely to be raised sitting on the bench.

Unless Winks can seriously turnaround his form this season, Tottenham may now have to accept an even more reduced price for the 25-old next season.

And they may well live to regret not cashing in on him while they had the chance, with Villa and Everton keen.
