Ivan Toney makes pointed dig at 'not the best' Arsenal
Ivan Toney has taken aim at Arsenal.
The Brentford striker has come down on the North London club with derision.
Just a matter of weeks after he shone against the Gunners on the opening day of the season, Toney has now stuck the boot in again.
Toney was too hot to handle for Arsenal, giving Ben White and Pablo Mari an uncomfortable start to the season.
Off the back of that performance he’s been talking about his shock at Arsenal’s performance.
Speaking to the Ballers podcast (via Daily Mail), Toney said:
“Arsenal fans are going to batter me for this, but you see Arsenal at the moment and they’re not the best.”
“There was a difference (between the Championship and the Premier League), don’t get me wrong, but it wasn’t crazy.”
“They were good at keeping the ball, but it didn’t really affect us. “
‘They weren’t as crazy as I thought.”
“I don’t know if it was they weren’t so good or we were just excited as it was our first game and it was Arsenal and Premier League, all these things coming into the picture.”
“I just didn’t see them how they used to be. You used to look at Arsenal and think crazy and they were going to win this game.”
“These days, I don’t see them winning nothing any time soon.”
Certainly damning words from Toney.
Ironically, the Gunners could really do with a striker of his ilk.
Last season the 25-year-old broke the Championship goal scoring record as he bagged 31 goals and ten assists (Transfermarkt).
He’d certainly make Arsenal better, but even if was to play for the Gunners they’d still be a long way away from winning trophies.
That’s the most damning part – Toney is absolutely right.
It’s difficult to see a way in which Arsenal will win silverware any time soon.
Arsenal supporters will just have to try and ignore the comments and focus on the project under Mikel Arteta.
