‘It’s very difficult’… Gabriel Agbonlahor reacts to transfer news coming out of Arsenal overnight

It’s no secret that Arsenal are operating under tight financial restrictions in January, something that Gabriel Agbonlahor has been stressing.

Whilst many are calling for Arsenal to sign the likes of Ivan Toney or Victor Osimhen this month, it simply doesn’t seem possible.

Mikel Arteta’s side have very little room to manoeuvre according to reports, they’re right at their Financial Fair Play limits.

That being said, it’s now been reported that Arsenal have made a bid for a striker overnight.

According to reports, Arsenal have made a £22m bid for Getafe’s Borja Mayoral, a 26-year-old who started out at Real Madrid.

If this information is to be believed, Mayoral could be a much more achievable alternative to the likes of Toney in January, something Agbonlahor discussed on talkSPORT.

Speaking with Alan Brazil, Agbonlahor thought a short-term solution like Mayoral could work for Arsenal.

Agbonlahor said: “I think it’s very difficult because everyone is saying Arsenal go and get Toney, but what if Arsenal can’t [because of] Financial Fair Play?

“They can’t pay the money that’s needed, they’re going to have to look at different options, if that’s an option, maybe short-term.”

Brazil replied: “See, I thought Calvert-Lewin would be perfect for Arsenal but can Everton afford to sell him, maybe not.”

Gabriel Agbonlahor wonders if Borja Mayoral could be the solution for Arsenal in January

Whilst we’ll wait to see how much truth there is in these reports, it doesn’t seem the best move for Arteta’s side either way.

Mayoral is having a strong season, he’s scored 14 goals in 22 games for Getafe, but he’s hardly an obvious upgrade on Eddie Nketiah.

Those numbers could easily be expected of the Englishmen if he was playing in La Liga, spearheading a smaller side built for his skill set.

Moreover, there simply seems no chance that Mayoral is ready to contribute more than Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal would definitely be better off waiting until the summer, even if Agbonlahor insists that something needs to be done in January.

Between them, Jesus, Nketiah and Kai Havertz can definitely see Arsenal through until thenr – these recent defeats have exaggerated the issue.

That being said, Micah Richards was pretty firm on what he thought Mikel Arteta should do to solve their recent woes.
