Nuno has admitted to Football London that Tottenham Hotspur’s newest addition Cristian Romero has been suffering with injury.

Injury issue

Romero picked up a knock in Argentina’s last game of the Copa America, which has stopped him training with Tottenham’s players after signing.

Romero has done some individual work, but he is yet to take to the field at Hotspur Way.

And Nuno says that Tottenham are being very careful with their new central defender, as they don’t want to rush him back and worsen the injury issue, which is rapidly improving.

“He didn’t train yet with the group. It’s true, he finished the Copa America in the last game with a problem. It’s much better, much better now but we have to be very careful first, not take any chances,” Nuno said.

“He, like all the players, Gio for example didn’t have too many sessions. Hugo. We have to manage a lot of aspects until the moment that we decide to put the player on the pitch. He is here, looks good and when he starts training in a normal way he will become an option.”

Romero’s failure to feature in full Tottenham training yet may reduce his chances of playing in their opening day clash with Manchester City.

If Spurs were to throw the 23-year-old in against the Premier League’s reigning champions with only days worth of training under his belt it would be a real baptism of fire.

But even if Romero doesn’t make it back for opening day, there is great excitement about his arrival at Spurs.

Tottenham struggled defensively last term, but Romero was one of the best centre-backs in Italy last campaign, and he could well have a transformative effect on the Tottenham backline.
