Alan Shearer spoke on the Premier League’s official YouTube channel this week about Leeds United star Pascal Struijk and how he’s similar to Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch defender has been at Leeds since January 2018. He joined the Whites from Ajax’s youth setup, and he has now established himself as a hugely important player at Elland Road.

Struijk, still only 22, was forced to play in multiple positions in the first half of the campaign due to injury issues at the club. He featured in midfield, central defence and even at left-back, and considering how poor Leeds were earlier this term, he couldn’t quite show the world what he’s all about.

Following Liam Cooper’s injury, Struijk started regularly at the back and although things haven’t always gone Leeds’ way, he has managed to catch Shearer’s eye.

The Premier League icon said: “Let’s take a look at Leeds defender Pascal Struijk.

“The left-footed 22-year-old got given his chance following an injury to Liam Cooper and while Leeds have not been at their best defensively this term, he’s certainly made his case to be a regular in the team.

Physically imposing at 6 ft 3in, he welcomes comparisons to Virgil van Dijk and having played for the Netherlands at youth level, Leeds fans will be hoping he reaches similar heights.

“He has averaged a block every match so far this season and it’s not just luck that puts him in the right place at the right time.”

Struijk has always been a player with huge potential but things, at times, just haven’t gone his way.

However, it is important to remember that he’s still just 22 years old. He has already played 60 times for Leeds so far and even though he has been on the bench in their last two games, he’s definitely one Jesse Marsch will help improve.

The van Dijk comparisons will always be there for Struijk due to his stature, position and nationality. The Liverpool man should be the defender he should look up to and if things go well for him, he may even partner van Dijk for the Dutch national team in the near future.

Leeds will take on Manchester City tomorrow and it will be interesting to see if Marsch will bring Struijk back into the starting eleven.
