‘It’s no excuse’: Kevin Campbell says £45m Arsenal player looked unfit against Chelsea

Arsenal put in what was arguably their worst performance of the season at the weekend against Chelsea.

The Gunners escaped with a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, but they were certainly second-best for large periods of the game.

Simply put, many of Arsenal’s best players didn’t turn up for the first 70 minutes or so, and one player who wasn’t at his best was Gabriel Jesus.

The striker wasn’t creating in the way he usually does, and his tireless engine was seemingly out of fuel.

Speaking on the Highbury Squad YouTube channel, Kevin Campbell has been reviewing Jesus’ performance at the weekend, and he says that the striker looked leggy against Chelsea, which, isn’t usually what he’s about.

Jesus looked leggy against Chelsea

Campbell shared his verdict on the £45m man’s showing against the Blues.

“I think Jesus’ legs were still on the plane. He seemed a bit leggy which is not like him. He got that early challenge on his ankle as well. We don’t know if that hindered him,” Campbell said.

“Like I say, his legs were on the plane, it’s not like he’s been back a long time. It’s no excuse, it is what it is, he’s been away, he got back, we hadn’t been together as a squad and we looked disjointed and leggy.”

Can’t blame Jesus

As frustrating as it was to watch Jesus play like that at the weekend, it was hard to really blame the player for his lack of match fitness.

That flight back from South America after international duty will take it toll on anyone, and with just a few days before he had to take to the pitch against Chelsea, Jesus didn’t have time to recover after what must’ve been a tough international break for any of the South American players in the Premier League.

We’re sure Jesus will be back to his best before too long.
