'It's just mad': Charles Watts stunned by what's happened with Arsenal star

Charles Watts has expressed frustration at Arsenal defender Ben White‘s omission from the England squad.

The 24-year-old has been a regular for the Gunners this season, starting every one of their Premier League games.

But despite this, the £50million Gunners man failed to make the cut for England’s recent Nations League matches.

Gareth Southgate opted for a centre-back selection of Eric Dier, Conor Coady, Fikayo Tomori, Marc Guehi, John Stones and Harry Maguire.

The Manchester United man’s inclusion in the squad proved especially controversial as he has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford.

Maguire made mistakes in the build-up to two of Germany’s three goals in England’s 3-3 draw on Monday.

“Absolutely be starting at a World Cup”

Watts, speaking on his YouTube channel, said he felt sorry for the Red Devils man as he was “hung out to dry”.

And he once again wondered why Southgate didn’t opt for the in-form Arsenal star.

“I still can’t believe that Ben White’s not in the England squad, it’s just mad,” said Watts.

“When you’re watching Harry Maguire do what he did yesterday.

“And I feel sorry for Maguire because he’s been hung out to dry by Gareth Southgate, if anything, because he’s just not played any football. He’s so rusty.

“His confidence must be absolutely on the floor, so why is he playing? Why is he in the squad? It makes absolutely no sense.

“That sort of error that we saw yesterday, or more than one error that we saw in that second half yesterday, it’s just bound to happen and he’s just being hung out to dry by Southgate.

“And both of them are as bad as each other in one way. Maguire on the pitch but Southgate even more so for actually picking him and putting him in that situation.

“Especially when you’re leaving Ben White who’s playing so well.

“Yes, at right-back, but we know you can just easily slide into centre-back.

“For me Ben White would absolutely be starting at a World Cup.

“Play him next to John Stones in a back four. We’ve got two progressive players who can play out from the back, and have Aaron Ramsdale behind him if Pickford’s injured.”
