'It's in the past now': Postecoglou names Celtic player who's got a clean slate going into next season

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has stressed that Hoops players who struggled last season will have a clean slate going into 2021-22.

He name-checked goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas as one of those who can get back into contention – if they work hard.

The 27-year-old joined Celtic from Greek outfit AEK Athens for a reported £4.5million last summer.

Barkas was the Bhoys’ first-choice keeper at the start of the campaign but ended it as a bench-warmer.

In the end, he made just 13 Premiership appearances, and 22 in all competitions.

Postecoglou is aware of how hard settling in a new country amid current events will have been for the likes of Barkas last year.

“It would have been a difficult season for a lot of the boys, probably more for the families,” he told the Glasgow Times.

“I felt it in Japan. We had foreigners there who were away from their families. It was a difficult year for everyone.

“When you’re coming into a new club you want them to get settled as quickly as they can off the field.

“I’m sure Barky and a few of the boys struggled a little bit, but that’s in the past now.

“Now it’s an opportunity for all of them to embrace what we’re doing.

“If they want to be part of what’s happening, they just have to show me with their performances in training and matches.”

Barkas will be eager to prove himself at Celtic – TBR View

Postecoglou has hit the nail on the head.

Barkas might have struggled last season, but considering everything that was happening in the world, it’s not surprising that he would’ve found it hard to settle in a new country.

But he’ll be eager to prove himself and show how good he is, how good he can be, and why the Hoops spent a fair bit of money on him.

Celtic are a good team with good players in their ranks – they wouldn’t have won so many trophies over the past few years otherwise.

If all goes well, the Hoops will bounce back this coming season and show that 2020-21 was a one-off in terms of bad campaigns.
