It’s become so obvious who Newcastle must appoint if they decide to sack Eddie Howe

Newcastle United have made a really poor start to the new Premier League season.

Newcastle’s performances have been well below par and their league position is a reflection of that, as they reside in 12th place.

As such, the pressure on Eddie Howe is beginning to mount ahead of The Magpies’ home clash against Arsenal this weekend, which almost feels like a must not lose.

With that said, if he fails to turn it around, it’s become so obvious who Newcastle should appoint as his successor.

Newcastle should appoint Graham Potter if Eddie Howe leaves

If Howe is to be dismissed, the obvious replacement is former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter.

Potter has been out of work since April 2023 – when he was sacked by Chelsea – and he’s been patiently waiting for the right opportunity.

The Englishman almost joined Leicester in the summer but that deal collapsed and in came Steve Cooper.

Potter would likely jump at the chance to work at St James Park and his methodology would suit the players down to the ground.

Potter’s project would be absolutely perfect for Newcastle

Potter looks to play a possession-based approach and that would complement the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, amongst others.

Plus, the 49-year-old places great emphasis on making tough decisions for the benefit of the club’s long term future.

Potter is a project manager and Newcastle still need development on and off the pitch, so for that reason, he’d be the perfect fit.

He also has a rich history of improving young talent and the current squad is one of the older average ages in the Premier League, so at some stage, they’ll need to have a rebuild and bring some of the younger players through.
