Spurs fans have been praising N17 icon Jermain Defoe after the club wished him a happy birthday on their Twitter feed.

Defoe, who had three spells at Tottenham in the 2000s and 2010s, turned 39 on Thursday.

The veteran striker, who is currently plying his trade for Scottish champions Rangers, began his first Spurs spell in February 2004.

Defoe joined Tottenham from West Ham for an initial fee of £6million, rising to £7million, and made 139 appearances, scoring 43 goals.

He then joined Portsmouth in January 2008, but spent just one year on the south coast before rejoining Spurs the following January.

Five more years followed with Spurs, which included appearances in the Champions League, before he joined MLS side Toronto FC in 2014.

Defoe only stayed 11 months into his four-year deal in Toronto before moving to Sunderland in 2015 and spending two years there.

The former England international then played for Bournemouth between 2017 and 2020, after which he joined Rangers.

Defoe’s tally for Spurs reads 362 appearances, 143 goals and 32 assists – definite club legend stats.

Therefore, it’s not surprising to see so many Spurs fans praise him on social media:
