‘It’s a team thing’: Jose Mourinho downplays Tottenham comparisons with Real Madrid

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has played down talk of comparisons between his current Spurs team and his former club, Real Madrid.

Spurs have enjoyed a blistering start to the season, leading the Premier League goalscoring charts ahead of their clash with Burnley this evening.

The likes of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son have led the charge, while a number of Mourinho’s summer signings have impressed since arriving at the club during the window.

But Mourinho has downplayed talk of Tottenham being like his title-winning Real Madrid team. Los Blancos scored 121 goals that season, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Mesut Ozil, so the comparisons are understandable.

No, in Real Madrid, I had amazing, amazing attacking players and we managed to build the team in a certain way,” Mourinho told Goal.

“It is a team thing, it’s not just about individuals. We need to be able to play with all these attacking players and have the team with everybody ready to be organised defensively and not to give space to the opponent. And behind, we need to improve in some details – that’s obvious.”

Tottenham can move up to fifth with a win at Burnley tonight. The Clarets, meanwhile, have only one point to their name and have conceded eight goals so far.

Without disrespect to Tottenham, only Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son can really class themselves as world-class. Plus, Madrid had a certain CR7 in the ranks, he smashed in 46 league goals that season.

Tottenham are well on their way to some success under Mourinho but it’s important not to get carried away.
