‘It’s a shame’: Troy Deeney backs Mesut Ozil, claims Arsenal boss Arteta has managed it badly

Former Watford striker and now pundit, Troy Deeney, has questioned Mikel Arteta’s treatment of Mesut Ozil and believes Arsenal could do with the German now.

The Gunners once again failed to score yesterday as they drew 0-0 with Leeds at Elland Road. It means Arteta’s men have scored just nine goals this season and sit in mid-table.

Ozil, meanwhile, has been cut adrift by Mikel Arteta. The 32-year-old is not even in the squads for both Europe and the Premier League, casting further doubt on his future at the club.

But Deeney, speaking to Talksport today, believes the Gunners might have made a mistake and questioned Arteta’s decision making.

“It’s a shame. I said last week, and I got battered for it, that he’s one of the best players I’ve played against. I think he’s very good and I think Aubameyang and players like that would thrive off someone like that slipping balls in; he sees passes others can’t.

“Something has definitely happened because he’s fallen off the face of the earth and he’s not even made the 25-man squad. You could make the argument, is that poor management? Because having him just in the 25 at least would allow you to put him in in this current situation.”

Ozil’s career, as Deeney touches on, appears to be over in Arsenal colours. However, the German may well be smiling on the inside ever so slightly, especially given the struggles the Gunners are having.

Bold call from Arteta but Deeney is right – TBR View

The biggest issue with this whole situation is that Arteta is clearly hiding something that has gone on at the club. There’s just no way you leave a player of Ozil’s quality out of the whole squad without good reason.

And it’s not just for footballing reasons, either. Troy Deeney is spot on here, there is more to this story that we’ll probably find out at a later date.
