Arsenal looked set to sign Riccardo Calafiori as their first big summer addition.

The Italian defender is said to have agreed personal terms with the Gunners, and a fee has almost been agreed.

However, as of yet, a deal isn’t done, and, frustratingly, it looks as though there’s been something of a snag.

Indeed, reports in the Italian press suggest there’s been a bit of an issue as Arsenal look to get this deal done.

Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal has stalled

According to Gazzetta, there’s something of a stalemate in the deal for Calafiori to join Arsenal.

Apparently, Arsenal and Bologna now haven’t spoken in regards to this deal for five days.

That’s quite a long time when you’re looking to close a multi-million pound deal.

However, Gazzetta note that the pause in talks between Bologna and Arsenal may not be a bad thing.

Indeed, the impasse in this deal doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with Arsenal.

Basel proving to be a problem in Calafiori deal

While Arsenal and Bologna haven’t spoken for five days, this stalemate isn’t down to either of those two parties.

Indeed, Bologna instead have an issue with Calafiori’s former club, Basel.

Basel are due a percentage of whatever fee Calafiori is sold for, and, understandably, Bologna aren’t too keen to pay the Swiss club such a hefty figure.

Bologna believe that they deserve more credit for Calafiori’s remarkable rise over the past 12 months, and ideally they want Basel to understand this and alter their terms.

Of course, Basel have no incentive to do Bologna such a massive favour, so it will be interesting to see how the Serie A club try to negotiate this one.

Calafiori to Arsenal appears to be basically agreed, and no more talks are really necessary, hence the pause, but Bologna need to sort things out on their end in regards to their agreement with Basel.
