‘It would hurt’: Steve Evans admits his Leeds United void season worries

Former Leeds United boss Steve Evans has something of a mixed reputation at Elland Road. The current Gillingham boss, who spent time in charge of Leeds United during the Massimo Cellino era, has however made his feelings about Leeds very clear this week.

The current postponement of football in the UK has Leeds United fans concerned that the club could be denied promotion to the Premier League should the season be declared null and void.

Speaking to Kent Online, Evans is clearly against that idea, suggesting he would prefer a ‘hibernation’ period, picking up the new season whenever it was safe to do so. He also made it clear that he still loves Leeds United.

“My view is that we go into hibernation until a date that is realistic and we come out and then finish the season, in a safe environment…

“…The other option to that is that we expunge the season. Time up, no relegation, no promotion, we start as we did last August. It would hurt Leeds United who I love, top of the Championship, I love Peterborough United and fancy them for promotion, it hurts teams I have a real affinity for and it hurts us because I think we have a chance of getting into the play-offs.”

Evans took over from Uwe Rosler at Elland Road in October 2015 and whilst he did improve the club’s results he never truly won over the Leeds United faithful.

The former Rotherham boss did, however, give the likes of Ronaldo Vieira and Bailey Peacock-Farrell chances in the first-team in West Yorkshire.

But trigger-happy Cellino soon pushed him out, sacking him at the end of May 2016 and bringing in Garry Monk just two days later.

But despite his mixed term at Leeds, it was always clear that Evans felt absolutely privileged to have a chance of managing the club.

It is clear from his latest comments that Evans remains a big supporter of the Whites.
