‘It wasn’t really his fault’: Pundit says you can’t blame £30m Arsenal player for the Fulham result

Arsenal were poor against Fulham.

There are no two ways about it, the Gunners were turgid against the Whites, and there wasn’t a single player who could walk off that pitch with their heads held high.

You could genuinely blame all 10 outfield players for that result, but speaking on ESPN, Craig Burley has claimed that one player you can’t blame for this one is David Raya.

The Spaniard was solid against Fulham on Sunday, and he’s perhaps the only player who didn’t put a foot wrong at Craven Cottage.

Raya wasn’t exactly incredible between the sticks, but he put in a solid enough showing and made the saves he was expected to make.

Raya is not to blame

Burley shared his verdict on the £30m man.

“We were looking for a response from Arsenal that they needed, I can go through the whole side here and say it. We’ve talked at length about the goalkeeper, but it wasn’t really his fault today, that’s a conundrum that has been there this year,” Burley said.

Playing well

Arsenal’s poor form is the talk of the Premier League at the moment, but the team’s poor performances shouldn’t mask what has been a good run of form for Raya.

The Spaniard has had his shaky moments over the last few months, but, strangely, these last few games may have been his best in an Arsenal shirt.

Against Fulham he made some important stops, while his quick thinking and distribution kickstarted the move that led to Arsenal’s opening goal.

Every other Arsenal player needs to improve and step up, but Raya has actually been as good as you’d expect him to be over this period.

Raya is in good form, and while it’s tough to focus on the positives at the moment, we mustn’t take that away from him.
