‘It was weird’: Micah Richards noticed something odd about Anfield while covering Liverpool v City

Micah Richards says the atmosphere around Anfield was nervous for the opening minutes of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City.

In recent years, Jurgen Klopp’s men and Pep Guardiola’s side have gone into these fixtures as the top two teams in the country.

But Liverpool were in mid-table before the game and have endured a patchy start to the season, while City sit second behind Arsenal.

And Richards, who was covering the game for Sky Sports, said that was reflected in the early atmosphere until Joe Gomes changed it after five minutes of the match.

Richards on Anfield atmosphere

Speaking on the Monday Night Club, he said: “It was weird being at the game.

“Normally Anfield straight from the off you can feel it. But there was more like a nervous energy, it was like they didn’t know what Liverpool side was going to turn up.

“After five or six minutes, Joe Gomez kicked the ball out of play and the Liverpool fans were cheering.

“Then after that the whole of Anfield was like a lion’s den, you could feel the energy in the stadium.”

Liverpool have now had two very good results of different types in recent games and they will hope that proves to be a springboard for their season.

Next up is a home clash with West Ham and they will be looking to keep their good run going with a victory at Anfield.

Liverpool fans will be looking for some consistency from their side with some favourable fixtures going into the World Cup, where they could make up ground in the chase for the top four.
