'It was me or him': England World Cup star now admits he almost signed for Liverpool

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has admitted he almost signed for Liverpool during Brendan Rodgers’ reign.

In the summer of 2015, Trippier had just been relegated from the Premier League with Burnley after just one season in the top flight.

The England international ended up signing for Tottenham, with Nathaniel Clyne joining Liverpool a couple of weeks later.

But Trippier has told the Undr the Cosh podcast that it was between him and Clyne who would move to Anfield at right-back.

Trippier says he almost joined Liverpool

He said: “I think it was after the season we got promoted.

“Obviously Tottenham, Everton and Liverpool – before they got Clyne as well.

“It was me or him who was going to go to Liverpool.”

At that time, Clyne was ahead of Trippier in the England pecking order and went to Euro 2016, with Trippier not included in that squad.

But he has since gone from strength to strength and was one of England’s best players at the 2018 World Cup out in Russia.

He of course scored the opening goal in the semi-finals but it was not to be for the Three Lions, but he is all set to go to his second World Cup, and his third major tournament overall.
