‘It sounds bonkers’… Darren Bent has just made huge claim about Arsenal this season

Darren Bent believes Arsenal have a better chance of winning the Champions League than the Premier League this season.

The former Tottenham striker has been discussing Arsenal’s chances of European success after qualifying for the knockout stages.

Arsenal topped their group comfortably on their return to the Champions League over the likes of PSV and RC Lens.

The Gunners have drawn Porto in the round of 16, with the first leg scheduled for February.

Mikel Arteta’s men have enjoyed an encouraging start to the campaign and currently sit top of the Premier League after beating Brighton on Saturday.

But Darren Bent feels they have a better chance of European success this season due to the strength of Manchester City and Liverpool in the league.

Bent makes huge claim about Arsenal’s Champions League chances

“I think Arsenal have a great chance,” Bent told talkSPORT. “I think Arsenal have a better chance of winning the Champions League than the league.

“It sounds bonkers but it’s because consistency over 38 games is tough. It’s tough!

“When you have Man City and Liverpool, to be consistently better than those is incredible. But the Champions League, it’s the luck of the draw.

“The only thing I think goes against Arsenal in this competition is experience, as they haven’t been in it for a while.”

Arsenal could beat any top side on their day and they will be a huge threat in the Champions League this term.

Arteta’s men will be expected to beat Porto and then they could look forward to even bigger challenges.

Of course, the likes of Bayern Munich and Manchester City are widely viewed as the favourites. But Bent makes a great point that Arsenal could benefit from a decent draw.

Nevertheless, it would be some achievement for Arteta to lift the trophy is his first season in the competition.

Arsenal may lack the required experience when it comes to the latter stages of the tournament. It took Pep Guardiola six years to win the competition with City.

With City also struggling in the league at the moment, the Gunners seem well-placed to mount a serious assault on the Premier League.
