It feels as if both Unai Emery and Aston Villa have a real opportunity to strengthen their side before the January window ends.

Fans may now be becoming slightly restless that Emery’s squad hasn’t been added to, even if a future deal for Kosta Nedeljkovic has now been secured.

And whilst it’s believed that Villa would like to sign a new striker to back up Ollie Watkins for the coming months, there seems to be little progress.

However, the club have been making strides towards the signing of Hakon Rafn Valdimarsson.

The 22-year-old Icelandic goalkeeper looks as if he could be an incredibly smart piece of business.

Fabrizio Romano recently confirmed that Villa have now made a bid for the Elfsborg keeper.

Speaking via GiveMeSport, Romano said: “For Valdimarsson, there is big competition. Aston Villa are working on that.

“They offered a bit more than €2m [£1.7m] to Elfsborg. He’s a talented goalkeeper, so he’s one of the players they are scouting for the present and future.

“I think they will keep working on that one. There is also Copenhagen, who can offer guaranteed playing time and other clubs are keeping a close eye on the deal.

“So, that is going to be one to watch.”

With Romano’s update considered, a deal does now look very promising.

Valdimarsson was recently speaking to Swedish outlet Aftonbladet and admitted his admiration for Villa.

And whilst the keeper was aware of a lot of interest this month, it seems he would be keen to link up with Emery and Villa in January.

Valdimarsson said: “There is interest from many teams now, we just have to wait and see what happens.

“Aston Villa is a giant club in the English Premier League and the team is doing very well. It is huge to see that they are interested.

“This shows that I played well last season.”

In terms of style, Valdimarsson is incredibly capable at playing out from the back.

It’s rare to find a goalkeeper who is so adept at playing with his feet, but Valdimarsson who schooled so relentlessly in Iceland whilst playing for Grotta IF.

There’s certainly no doubt that Icelandic international would make a very good understudy for Emiliano Martinez were a deal successful.

That being said, it seems as if Unai Emery is eyeing up another impressive January deal for his fledgling Villa side.
