Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has made a comment about Manchester United after hearing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is leaving.

Klopp’s announcement this morning has rocked the footballing landscape and Liverpool will now be looking for their first new manager in nearly a decade.

Old favourites such as Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso are bound to come into the frame, albeit Gerrard’s stock has dropped considerably.

And speaking about Klopp’s departure on TalkSPORT, former Red Thompson has said the comparisons will be drawn to when Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United.

Phil Thompson makes Manchester United comparison after Jurgen Klopp news

Speaking on TalkSPORT about Klopp, Thompson spoke on who the next manager might be and namechecked both Alonso and Gerrard.

However, Thompson also mentioned Manchester United, and believes the task for a new manager is going to be a huge one.

“Even if it is Xabi Alonso or Steven Gerrard. I was really hoping, people spoke about it, Pep Lijnders who has done a wonderful job – he would. But if they all go as well, then it is all starting anew. And we all know that no matter what football club, you bring people in with different ideas, you look at how Manchester United have struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson left, it is difficult to replicate,” Thompson said.

Klopp leaves a gaping hole

Replacing a successful manager is hard for any club. But replacing a manager of Klopp’s magnitude is even harder.

The German has had such a lasting impact on both the club and the city in general and Liverpool will feel his loss more than most clubs losing a manager would.

Those who are in the frame to replace Klopp will need all the gusto he has and more to even have a chance of succeeding.

Indeed, the pressure will be enormous and there aren’t many jobs in world football that are more difficult to step into right now.

Klopp, then, might even end up having a say on who comes in.
