‘It doesn’t help’: Ledley King explains his sympathy for £92k-a-week Spurs player
Ledley King has admitted that he feels sympathy for Tottenham player Eric Dier, who’s not part of the England squad this summer at Euro 2020 due to a mixed season with his club.
King, who is the first team assistant at Spurs, is understanding of the 27-year-old’s situation.
Dier was one of the heroes of England’s run to the semi finals of the 2018 World Cup. However, he’s not part of the 26-man Three Lions squad at this summer’s major international tournament.
Despite his versatility, the £92,000-a-week enforcer spent the entire 2020/21 campaign operating as a centre-back.
Ex-Spurs manager Mourinho singled him out as the man he wanted in the heart of defence this campaign. Notably, the opening months of the season were successful for him.
Unfortunately, the second half of the campaign was massively inconsistent. He did come into the team near the end for some matches under interim boss Ryan Mason.
Spurs coach King has spoken about Dier’s overall season:
“It was the first year he (Dier) committed to playing just one position but I think the team’s dip in form played a part in him not making the [England] squad. It doesn’t help when you don’t have a consistent partner and there are a lot of changes around the back four,” King told the Evening Standard.
Does Eric Dier still have a Tottenham future?
It’s hard to picture anyone else moving to try sign Dier right now.
He’s still got three year remaining on his Spurs deal, so perhaps he’ll be around for a while longer still.
On his day, he’s shown he can really suit the centre-half position with a nice balance between aggressive defending and composure on the ball.
However, errors are a big part of his game that is holding him back.
Aged 27, there is still time for him to reignite his best form and perhaps a chance of manager will help with that.
