Funded by the wealth of Roman Abramovich, Chelsea have developed into one of the footballing superpowers since the Russians arrival with many fans; or day-trippers, not knowing of the pre-2003 era. Chelsea have since set transfer records involving players such as Andriy Shevchenko and Fernando Torres while obtaining a vast amount of young players in the hope they will be fruitful.
This season has been the worst of the Abramovich era with Chelsea sinking within touching distance of the relegation zone under Jose Mourinho. This can only be described as a complete capitulation by the title winners last term. It came to a point that few knew the reason behind the Chelsea disaster. Was it Mourinho, the players, bad luck or poor football? It could have easily been all four. Anyhow, after a defiant showing Mourinho paid the price for the poor form and in came Guus Hiddink for a second time. Since then results have been steady yet Chelsea still languish in 13th place with top four being a long shot.
Due to the abhorrent form, reinforcements have been deemed necessary this January with Alexandra Pato being brought in and out-of-form Ramires sent to ply his trade in the Chinese Super League for £25 million. Robin Van Persie has recently been linked to The Blues yet a bid seems unlikely, especially with the signature for the young talented former AC Milan forward seemingly close to being secured.
Pato has been loaned from Corinthians after his pricey wages were too much for the Brazil side to handle. Yet, the move for a talent that hasn’t played an international game for his country since 2013 comes with question marks surrounding the deal. Does he answer any questions or is it just a hit and hope move that Chelsea can afford to lose out on, especially with Remy desperate for the chance to impress on the bench and Costa bang in form.
The sale of Ramires also has question marks around it with his experience and drive from midfield a feature that none of Chelsea’s current more defensive midfielders have. However, even with the experience he has, £25m for him seems to good to miss out on.
This term, Chelsea have suffered in every area of the pitch, yet key figures in the team have maintained their place throughout the duration of the season. The lack of competition throughout the first-team must delight some squad members. Willian, Hazard and Oscar have it best. Fabregas is seen as a useful asset further back in the line-up while Pedro has had a shocking time in England after scoring and impressing on his debut.
It comes to a point that Chelsea’s lack of forward thinking in the transfer market leads to problems. Yes, they have multiple young players out on loan gaining experience but a few are ready, while a few will never make the grade. Giving players like Charley Musonda, Dominic Solanke and Ruben Loftus-Cheek a chance to impress may be highly rewarding. A decent showing from the youngsters would provide a perfect kick in the teeth for more experience members of the squad, while taking the young men out of the first-team picture after a run of games won’t cause any issue with the pragmatic understanding that their time will come.
Another way Chelsea could have avoided this disaster was too re-evaluate the worth of former players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Andre Schurrle. Both are having good seasons for Man City and Wolfsburg respectively after having their time cut short at Chelsea. Money has overriden the future worth of both players. A developed De Bruyne could certainly have removed Oscar or Hazard from the line-up this term. Could Chelsea end up ruing snatching the £25 million offered for Ramires?
Recalling loaned players may also benefit Chelsea’s horrific situation with established stars such as Cuadrado. He; like De Bruyne, wasn’t given sufficient time to impress at Stamford Bridge. Cuadrado has been one of Juve’s top performers; according to WhoScored.com, and has himself seen Juve turned around their own disaster this season. If a potential recall is included within the terms of the loan deal, then Cuadrado; like others, could come back to London and do a job for The Blues.
A rash policy of swooping up many potential talents, discarding many unproven players and excessively loaning useful players certainly can’t do Chelsea any good. This may have finally caught up with the London club which may be reason to why they have stuttered so badly this term.
