Too often in the past year, Newcastle have been on the end of some woeful scorelines. This season for example has seen 5-1 drubbings at Chelsea and Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace. Six derby defeats in a row; and eight without a win, and the 6-1 collapse at Manchester City this term are simply unacceptable. Coloccini was a very authoritative centre half but with that extra yard of pace gone, he looks all over the place and doesn’t lead his backline in an organised fashion.
They need a fresh face to rule from the back, get them up the pitch and be the voice on the field. A player like Curtis Davies would be ideal – he’s quick, experienced and an leader, just what they need. Unlucky to be relegated with Hull, he’s a very underrated centre back who is twice the player of the current club captain at St James’. Newcastle need someone who can coach through youngsters in a game, with positioning and timing as it was clear that winger Aarons, playing left back at Chelsea two weeks ago, was most certainly not getting that.
It’s not fool-proof but I believe Newcastle United can make their way up the order in the Premier League again with some changes to how they run things. It has been two decades since the infamous Kevin Keegan rant during their title tussle with Manchester United and now 11 years since their FA Cup semi-final against the same side under Graeme Souness. I don’t want to see a club of the stature and fan-base size like Newcastle fall through the trap door, it’s bad enough to see the state of Aston Villa. Either way, Mike Ashley will be a busy man this summer.
