Is this how Louis Van Gaal can win back Manchester United’s fans?

Manchester United’s poor season went from bad to worse just over a week ago – a 1-0 loss to Southampton at Old Trafford in a drab affair that saw United fail to test Fraser Forster for the entire match. The full-time whistle was met with a chorus of boos from the home fans. Hostility has been slowly rising inside Old Trafford for a number of months now, but it is now crystal clear what the fans want. Louis Vaan Gaal has to leave. But what can the boss do to win back the Manchester United faithful?

First of all, he has to make them exciting to watch again. LVG has made United unrecognisable during his reign as manager. The days of three to four goals a game are gone, in fact we are now lucky to see one. Supporters haven’t seen The Red Devils score at home during the first half for 11 games now. This is a drought that very few clubs are used to, let alone a club that have been champions of England a record 20 times. This would require Van Gaal to drop his philosophy, but I can’t see any other way the Dutchman will get the side scoring again. In their win against Derby on Friday, the ‘Van Gaal way’ didn’t seem as prominent. United had 13 shots in the match – a nice change to the usual two or three and with Anthony Martial back to his usual self; running at opponents, beating players and putting the ball in to dangerous areas. Has LVG finally given up on his style of play?

Another thing that could restore faith is movement in the transfer market. The window is nearly closed and we are yet to see a new face at Old Trafford, despite the fact it is obvious that new signings are required to move this team forward. United have been linked with every player under the sun over the past few seasons, in particularly strikers. Charlie Austin; Saturday’s goal-scorer, cost The Saints a minuscule £4,000,000. This would have been a mere drop in the ocean for United and would surely have been a great signing for any team. Karim Benzema has been linked with a Premier League move for a while now; a proven scorer in La Liga, and surely he could do the job in England? Also; with their injury list growing, a defender would be a welcome addition to the squad and would be able to strengthen the defence.

His final option is securing some silverware. A trophy hasn’t been added to the cabinet since 2013 and with the Premier League looking like an increasingly impossible task, eliminated from the Champions League, the League Cup nearly over and not many fans wanting the Europa League, all that is left is the FA Cup. Even winning this trophy will not be enough for some fans, but with an impressive 3-1 win over Derby, this is looking the only competition that the Red Devils have a chance with.

Louis Van Gaal is fighting an uphill battle with the odds stacked against him and I can’t see him turning around this disastrous season, leaving his departure nothing less than inevitable in the coming months.
