Rumours have emerged over the last day or so that Tottenham Hotspur are now leading the race for Bayern Munich star Mario Götze.
After a difficult few years in Bavaria, the German international has reportedly informed his current club that he intends to leave this summer, in order to kick-start his stagnating career. His former side, Borussia Dortmund, were thought to be in poll position to sign the 24-year-old, with the closest competition coming from Liverpool.
However, German newspaper Bild is now claiming that Tottenham are in talks with the player’s representatives about a summer switch to White Hart Lane.
Of course, it is still early days. The news could well encourage Dortmund and Liverpool to make their interest official, but the prospect of Götze playing for Spurs is certainly an intriguing one. So, what can he offer Mauricio
Pochettino’s side, and is he the man to take them to the next level?
For starters, Tottenham would be gaining one of Europe’s most talented midfielders, and one with an abundance of Champions League experience at that. With Spurs playing in the competition for just the second time, many of their youthful squad will be lacking in experience at that level. This is not an issue for Götze, who despite only being 24, has played 43 times in the Champions League, and even reached the final with Dortmund in 2012/13.
The prospect of the Memmingen-born man linking up with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen, must have Spurs supporters licking their lips. Götze appears to have been swallowed up amongst the talented array of midfielders that Bayern have at their disposal, and a move to Spurs would be the perfect opportunity for him to shine in a similar environment to that which he flourished in at Dortmund.
Despite the talents of the aforementioned players, Spurs lack of depth in attacking positions meant that they eventually burnt out when it mattered most last season. Champions League qualification means even more games this season, so the addition of Götze would certainly lighten the load on Messrs Alli and Eriksen.
On his day, Götze is a level above anybody in the current Spurs side, and Kane would surely relish the service that the German could potentially provide. It would certainly be a step up on some of the other midfielders linked to Spurs this summer, such as Newcastle United midfielders Moussa Sissoko and Georgina Wijnaldum.
If it is Champions League football that Götze is looking for, then the move to Spurs actually makes a lot of sense. Although he has been linked with Liverpool for months, a move that would reunite him with his former mentor Jurgen Klopp, the Reds will not be competing in Europe next season after finishing 8th in the Premier League, meaning Spurs may actually be the more appealing proposition.
Additionally, Pochettino has quickly developed a reputation for helping players reach their potential. A spell working alongside the Argentine could be exactly what Gotze needs, especially within Spurs’s aggressive high- pressing game. This is a very similar system to the ‘gegenpressing’ tactic that Gotze became accustomed to whilst playing under Klopp at Dortmund.
Pochettino also sets up his side in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with the attacking three behind the striker awarded a large degree of freedom. Again, the Bayern man has prospered in a similar setup previously, and surely would not take long to get used to the way that Spurs play.
It is an important summer for Spurs as they prepare for yet another push for the Premier League title. Many who watched Spurs last season remarked that they were just one or two components away from being a truly top team. The addition of Gotze and one or two of a similar calibre may well propel them to that level.
