Reports in Metro state that Ligue Une side Paris Saint-Germain have named their price for their midfield star Marco Verratti amid interest from both Chelsea and Juventus, with that price tag worth a reported £68.2 million. The Italian has been tipped as the next big thing after a string of impressive displays for the Parisians, but could now face an exit in January or in the summer with a potential sale likely to fund the purchase of a striker for PSG.
What would he bring to Chelsea?
The 24-year-old has huge quality and would fit in perfectly alongside N’Golo Kante. Preferring a deeper midfield role, he would be a clear upgrade on Nemanja Matic thanks to his brilliant vision and passing abilities, and is also capable of bursting forward and getting in amongst the goals himself. With experience at the very top level with four French league titles to his name and numerous Champions League appearances despite his young age, he would be a long term solution to a midfield headache for Antonio Conte.
Is a move likely?
Verratti has a good relationship with Antonio Conte from their time working together in the Italian national team, with the former Pescara man merely a bit part player until the Chelsea boss made him an established option and key player for the Azzurri. However, he may prefer a return to his home country with Juventus, who are still looking to replace Paul Pogba, or to remain in France.
Verdict
5/10 – These rumours may indicate that PSG are open to negotiations, but that seems unlikely given how much of a key player Verratti is for them and the room he still has for improvement. His huge potential is also attracting interest from Juventus, who could offer him almost guaranteed titles every year, but with four and a half years left on his existing contract it seems that no matter how ideal a signing he would be, it is hard to see him departing the Parc des Princes.
