Tottenham negotiating a contract extension for Jan Vertonghen could be the key to keep Toby Alderweireld.
As reported by the Sun, Spurs are ready to extend Vertonghen’s current deal by another year.
As things stand, Vertonghen will become a free agent at the end of the current season.
It is therefore vital for the north Londoners to act with haste.

Vertonghen has been an outstanding servant to the club since arriving in 2012.
The former Ajax defender has been a pillar of consistency at the back over the years and is currently one the best centre-halves in the Premier League.
There aren’t very many better than him, although a case can be made for the man he plays alongside, Alderweireld.
Vertonghen to stay, Alderweireld to follow suit?
If Tottenham can successfully extend Vertonghen’s contract – and one has to believe that that is likely – then surely they stand a better chance of keeping hold of Alderweireld.
The pair have a tremendous understanding at the back for Spurs.
Both know each other inside and out having taken similar paths throughout their careers.
They played together at Ajax and still do for Belgium, and have been a successful Premier League pairing for a few seasons now.

Alderweireld was strongly linked with a move to Manchester United over the summer.
Jose Mourinho ultimately failed in his quest to sign the Belgian and now Spurs must get busy regarding both of their centre-halves.
Alderweireld may need that motivation from Vertonghen’s commitment
That, and winning a trophy of course.
