Newcastle Untied midfielder Sean Longstaff is reportedly close to signing a new long-term contract at St James’ Park.

According to the Chronicle, the 20-year-old is set to pen a new deal imminently after positive discussions with the North East club over the international break.

His current contract is due to expire at the end of the season, but he looks likely to resolve his future and extend his stay at his boyhood club.

Longstaff’s new contract could be a sign that he is on the break of a serious first-team breakthrough and supporters may see more of him this season.

The central midfielder made his senior debut this campaign in an EFL Cup match against Nottingham Forest and has also been an unused substitute in a few Premier League matches so far this season.

Newcastle’s midfield area is hardly settled right now and it looks like there may be room for their highly-rated youngster to break into the side on a more regular basis.

Longstaff is a goalscoring midfielder that impressed out on loan in League One with Blackpool last season, while he also experienced further first-team experience with Kilmarnock in Scotland in the past.

Newcastle are always keen for young talents to make the step up from the academy and Longstaff is definitely someone to keep an eye on this campaign.
