Big signings
Mesut Özil was the first so-called big name signing to join Arsenal in a big-money move. The midfielder arrived at The Emirates from Real Madrid back in 2013, for around £42 million. It announced to the world that Arsenal had money, but also said to many players that the North London outfit were a club that was still attractive to big names.
Would Petr Cech, Alexis Sanchez and co. have joined Arsenal if they didn’t have Özil? Obviously, that question cannot be answered, but the importance of what the former Madrid man did at the time; and perhaps what he does now, to attract players is vital to Arsenal.
Only last week, new signing Shkodran Mustafi told Sky Sports that he spoke to Özil about joining the club, and quite possibly the creative genius had a significant role in sealing the deal for Arsenal’s newest defensive stalwart. Having big name players, or popular players, helps to attract more. It may make all the difference, come May.
