Is Liam Cooper’s starting position secured at Leeds?

Leeds United defender Liam Cooper insists that he’s currently in the best form of his four-year spell at Elland Road.

The 27-year-old Whites captain joined the Yorkshire giants back in 2014 from Chesterfield and has gone on to become an important player.

The no-nonsense centre-back has become a regular this campaign under Argentinian manager Marcelo Bielsa and helped the team up to third in the Championship table.

Enforcer Cooper was asked if he’s currently playing his best football ever in a Leeds shirt and confidently claimed he is.

“For sure yeah, I’m really enjoying my football at the minute. Life outside of it is good and I’m just enjoying my life at the moment. Always helps when you’re playing well and playing in a good team and the spirit of the group this year has been unbelievable so far,” Cooper told LUTV.

Cooper has been a consistent performer for Leeds this campaign in the heart of defence, but remarkably his position in the starting XI may not be fully secured despite his good form.

There is such immense competition within the squad this campaign that he could find himself omitted from Bielsa’s side at any moment.

Sweden international Pontus Jansson looks back to his combative best and most would agree he’s the outstanding centre-back at the club when on top form.

Meanwhile, Gaetano Berardi has stepped up his return from injury during the international break by featuring for the Under-23s side and he looked a natural fit at centre-back in Bielsa’s side before his setback.

Bielsa now has a real ultimatum over which two centre-backs are his best combination when all are available.
