Is Jose Mourinho right to tell three first-team stars that they can leave Manchester United?

Spanish newspaper Marca claim that Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has told three key first team players that they are free to leave the club this summer, making it clear that he will not stand in the way of any player who does not want to be at Old Trafford next season.

The news may come as a shock for some fans given that the trio have all been key figures under Mourinho this season, having made a combined 129 appearances this season. Whilst their sales could bring in some huge transfer fees to fund the former Real Madrid boss in the transfer market this summer, it seems that it could be a huge gamble to allow some key players to leave in order to gamble on new signings.

Here, we will take a look at ech player and whether it would be a mistake for Mourinho not to fight to keep them at the club…

David de Gea

Arguably the most important of the three players, the goalkeeper has been linked with Real Madrid once again after a move there collapsed two years ago but has gone on to show his importance to the side since then.

With 15 clean sheets so far this season, he is undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers and it will not be easy or cheap for Mourinho to replace him, with Manchester rival Joe Hart or AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma seemingly the only realistic targets, That said, if De Gea does want to return to his home country, there may be little that United can do to stop him.

Ander Herrera

A departure for the midfielder may be the biggest surprise of all. This season has been a revolution for the Spaniard as he has rapidly become one of United’s most crucial players, bossing game after game from the heart of midfield.

His most recent displays, such as that which silenced Eden Hazard at Old Trafford, are bound to have caught the eye of a number of clubs from across Europe, but he could be the most important to keep hold of too.

A real midfield enforcer, Herrera has become a true Mourinho player who is not afraid to get stuck in and bend the rules when required. Clearly enjoying his time at the club, it would be a huge shock to see him leave this summer now that Mourinho has moulded the former Athletic Bilbao man into his perfect midfield player alongside Paul Pogba.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

With offers from abroad for the 35-year-old, his devastating knee injury could have had a huge impact on his future. With months of recovery now ahead of him, potential suitors may have seen their interest wane, but that could play into United’s hands.

Clearly a huge contributor off the field as well as on it, he could be worth keeping around, but on huge wages and with question marks over his fitness upon his return, it may not be as gutting as could be first thought if the Red Devils lose their top scorer with 28 goals to his name this season.
