Is it time for Neves to warm the bench at Molineux?

Wolverhampton Wanderers lost 1-0 to bottom side Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night in the Premier League (BBC Sport).

The Black Country club were downed by the Terriers thanks to a last-gasp winner from Steve Mounie, meaning two of Huddersfield’s three league victories this term have now come against Wolves.

It was a poor showing from Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, who again struggled against a side lower down in the table.

There were very players that could have laid claim to a good game

One player who particularly disappointed was Ruben Neves.

The Portuguese youngster was sloppy in possession and struggled to impose himself on the game.

Time for tough love?

Neves’ Huddersfield performance was just one of a number of poor showings for Wolves recently.

Unfortunately the midfielder has been unable to maintain his higher standards from earlier in the season, and appears to be wilting as the season wears on.

His midfield colleagues Joao Moutinho and Leander Dendoncker have been outperforming him in the engine room lately, but Nuno has kept the faith with him.

Neves has been a mainstay this season, making 26 Premier League appearances – 25 of which have been starts.

But with his form dwindling, perhaps it is time for Nuno to drop Neves to the bench for a few games to prompt a response from the talented 21-year-old. Against Bournemouth and Huddersfield, he registered average match ratings of just 6.2 and 6.47 respectively (via WhoScored)

Neves hasn’t been at the races and perhaps some tough love is required – Romain Saiss could be an option for the manager.
