Fringe man Ademola Lookman was one of Everton’s stronger performers in the cup defeat to Southampton, but has he done enough to earn a first start in the Premier League this season?
The Toffees were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties on Tuesday night, leaving fans frustrated that the long wait for silverware continues.
Manager Marco Silva decided to make seven changes to his starting XI and one fresh face may have forced his hands when it comes to picking the next side in the Premier League.
Lookman earned his first start of the season and looked Everton’s most dangerous threat going forward against Premier League opposition Southampton, before being substituted off in the second-half.
The 20-year-old is a highly-rated winger that impressed out on loan last season with RB Leipzig and his midweek display will have done himself no harm.
He showed a real desire to take defenders on with his pace and dribbling, something that has been missing at times from Everton.
The Merseyside club travel to Leicester City at the weekend and speed machine Lookman surely has to be in the thinking of Silva for a first league start this campaign.
But unfortunately for him the competition in wide areas is tough, as the likes of Theo Walcott, Bernard and Richarlison are also in contention alongside him.
Lookman may have to continue being patient for the foreseeable future and try make the most of chances off the bench in the league.
