The Sun are reporting that Diego Costa is set to end the speculation surrounding his long-term future by signing a new contract with Chelsea.
The Spanish striker had been expected to move to the Far East either during the January transfer window or by the summer with a host of Chinese Super League club’s willing to offer mind-blowing sums of money to secure his signature. The 28-year-old appeared to be set to depart Stamford Bridge in mid-January after he was dropped from the match day squad to face Leicester City following a behind-the-scenes bust-up with a fitness coach with rumours abound that he was interested in a move to China.
However, Costa is now set to commit his long-term future The Blues.
Antonio Conte has always insisted that the striker would not be allowed to leave the club during the season and the Italian’s hardball stance seems to have had the desired effect. Costa’s representatives are reported to have reached an agreement in principle with Chelsea that will see the Spaniard become the club’s highest-paid player with a five-year contract worth £220,000 per week plus additional bonuses.
Since arriving from Athletico Madrid in the summer of 2014 for £32,000,000 Costa has proven to be a valuable asset for Chelsea having already netted over 50 times for the club. He already has 15 goals to his name so far this campaign and his prowess in front of goal has helped to cement Antonio Conte’s side at the summit of the Premier League and as the clear favourites to lift the title in May.
The striker has often attracted controversy for his abrasive, physical, in-your-face style of play but has always remained a popular figure at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea supporters will undoubtedly be delighted to see their star striker sign a new long-term deal
