Is Davies’ position under threat at Everton as Gomes and McCarthy near returns?

Tom Davies may struggle to keep his place in the Everton starting lineup, with Andre Gomes and James McCarthy both set to return after the international break.

Davies has started six Premier League matches so far, and has also been wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman.

He seems to have the trust of manager Marco Silva, despite still being one of the least experienced players.

Davies has done well in parts, putting in some industrious performances alongside Idrissa Gueye in the engine room.

He has, however, received stick from some Everton supporters on social media.

Is his position about to come under threat?

It’ll be interesting to see now just how loyal Silva is to the youngster, with the Telegraph reporting that Gomes and McCarthy are both nearing their first-team returns.

The midfield duo are on course to come back after the international break.

Loan signing from Barcelona Gomes has been recovering from a pesky hamstring problem. McCarthy has been out since January after breaking his leg against West Bromwich Albion.

Both featured in a 60-minute training match at USM Finch Farm on Thursday, along with another injured star Yerry Mina.

All three could be available for the game with Crystal Palace following the international break.

Davies will have to raise his game, because at the moment he is arguably most at risk of being replaced.

Tough-tackling Gueye continues to shine, and Gylfi Sigurdsson has come into some outstanding form lately and is a game-changer for the Toffees.

Davies has had a good run, but he’ll surely need to do more now. Especially with McCarthy back on the scene.
