Is Chelsea’s Asmir Begovic on his way to AFC Bournemouth?

Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic could be set for a switch to AFC Bournemouth, according to reports. Numerous media outlets, including the Mirror, have claimed that the Cherries last week submitted a bid in the region of £10 million for the 29-year-old, which was rejected. However, Sky Sports are now saying that Blues manager Antonio Conte will sanction a move – as long their valuation is met and they have signed a replacement. Begovic has been starved of game time since joining Chelsea from Stoke City for a fee of £8 million in 2015. In total, he has made only 17 appearances for the club, with Thibaut Courtois having a stranglehold on the number one jersey.

What would he bring to Bournemouth?

Begovic is a seasoned Premier League campaigner, with 50 appearances for Bosnia and Herzegovina also to his name. He had played a starring role for the Potters during a five-year spell, which earned him a big-money move to Stamford Bridge two years ago. Begovic is a commanding presence who would bring serious pedigree to the Cherries. With Artur Boruc soon to turn 37 years of age and out of contract at the end of the season, it is no surprise that boss Eddie Howe is targeting a new number one stopper. Bournemouth have leaked goals this campaign, although that is due to defensive shortcomings rather than mistakes by Boruc.

How likely is it?

Chelsea rejected Bournemouth’s initial bid but encouraged them to return with a higher offer to land their man. A figure of £12 million has been widely suggested, which would make Begovic the second most expensive signing in Bournemouth’s history, after Jordon Ibe. The Bosnian international is believed to be keen on a switch as he seeks regular football. As already stated, however, Conte will only let Begovic leave West London once he has secured a replacement, which could be a stumbling block. Personal terms would also need to be agreed.

8/10 – There appears to be a will on all sides to get this deal over the line before the transfer window closes.
