Is Benjamin Mendy’s surgery an opportunity for Wolves?

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy underwent surgery on Wednesday evening.

The French World Cup winner had a meniscus problem and had to go under the knife in Barcelona.

It is the second time Mendy has had an operation as a City player; last season he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury.

No time frame has yet been put in place for Mendy’s return, with a club statement reading: “Surgery was conducted on Wednesday evening and everyone at Manchester City wishes Benjamin a speedy recovery.”

It’s fairly to safe to say that Mendy won’t be back playing before 2018 is out, meaning Oleksandr Zinchenko may now be handed more opportunities – which could be of interest to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wolves can assess old target

Mendy’s absence could potentially pave the way for Zinchenko to play more games at the Etihad Stadium, with fixtures set to come thick and fast over the festive period.

Fabian Delph is likely to be Pep Guardiola’s go-to, but Zinchenko will surely have a role to play.

It’s a chance for Wolves to get a closer look at the Ukraine international, to see if it’s worth going back in for him in January.

Wolves failed with a £16 million deadline day move for the player (Sky Sports) only a few months ago.

The move appeared to collapse because of the player’s intention to fight for his place – since then though, he has featured very little.

Wolves are short in the full-back areas, with only Matt Doherty, Jonny Otto Castro and Ruben Vinagre for Nuno Santo to choose from.

Zinchenko would be an astute signing, especially as he could also provide competition for Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho in midfield.
