The Manchester Evening News report that Jose Mourinho is monitoring the situation of Barcelona’s Jordi Alba with an eye to a potential summer move to bring the Spanish international to Old Trafford. With left-back one of the key problem positions identified in the Red Devils’ line-up, Alba would be one of the best options in the world which could certainly push the team from contenders into favourites for the top four and a potential title challenge.
Would Alba be a replacement for Luke Shaw?
The future is already looking bleak for Shaw given that he has made just one Premier League appearance since October after reportedly falling out with Jose Mourinho. He has clearly not done enough to convince, and with other unpopular figures like Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo ahead of him in the pecking order, it could just be a matter of deciding how much to demand for the youngster and which club he will move to.
Would he want to come?
Alba is thought to be growing frustrated in Catalonia with Luis Enrique’s latest system which does not involve full-backs, with Alba’s only start since the system change coming as part of a back three in which he was visibly uncomfortable. A new manager will be appointed in the summer which could dictate whether or not the situation will change, but if the change in formation is a long term one then there could be doubts over Alba’s future.
With a number of titles under his belt, from La Liga and Champions League to the World Cup, Alba would be a quality addition to the squad. The 28-year-old is a major threat when bombing down the wing, overlapping and teaming up well with the left winger whenever possible, but has developed a reputation as a capable defender too. Whether or not he could adapt to the pace and strength of the Premier League may be Alba’s biggest test, but his addition would be a real statement and sign of intent from Mourinho and co.
