Is a move for Barcelona’s Gerard Pique realistic for Chelsea?

Is a move for Barcelona’s Gerard Pique realistic for Chelsea?

The Daily Star have picked up on claims in Spain that suggest that Gerard Pique could make a move to London with Chelsea favourites for his signature. The reports suggest that his wife Shakira is unhappy in Barcelona and wants to move to England, with Pique now considering his future as a result in what would undoubtedly be one of the biggest transfers of the year for one of the world’s best defenders. The Champions League winner has won almost all there is to win in Spain and on the European stage but could now consider his options.

What would he bring to Stamford Bridge?

One of the best defenders in the world, Pique is superb both on and off the ball. Whilst his style of possession football could be dangerous in the Premier League but given his great technical abilities he would surely adapt. Strong and physical, the Spaniard also has a huge threat when attacking at corners. Something that can be easily forgotten is that he has Premier League experience too, having won the league with Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson during his brief spell at the club.

Is a move likely?

In short, no. Pique has always been a bit of a scapegoat for many opposition fans in Spain and has been on the end of a lot of criticism, but he maintains a desire to one day fulfill a role as club president at the Nou Camp. Leaving would damage his chances of that, and there have been no other signs that his wife Shakira would try to encourage him to leave. He does have experience in England, but has shown no sign of wanting a return anytime soon.

2/10 – It seems that the transfer window has sparked even the most ridiculous of transfer rumours already, but this move seems hugely unlikely to ever amount to anything.
