The Express claim that Jose Mourinho and Manchester United are preparing a move to sign Real Madrid defender Pepe on a free transfer and may already have offered the 33-year-old a contract as he has now entered the final six months of his existing deal at the Bernabeu, allowing him to begin negotiations with other clubs. After 10 years in Madrid, the tough tackling Portugal international may now consider his options and seek an exit, with Mourinho keen to ensure that his destination is the Premier League.
What would he bring to Manchester United?
The key thing that Pepe would bring to Old Trafford would be experience. United have several options in central defence but most are very young and inexperienced, with Chris Smalling one of the most senior players in the ranks. Pepe would bring experience at the very highest level, having won the Champions League and the European Championship in 2016. He would also bring grit and steel, with a no-nonsense approach that many of Mourinho’s current options lack.
Is a move likely?
Very, Pepe is said to be considering his options after falling out of favour under Zinedine Zidane and has offers from across Europe and China. The financial offering of China may be a threat and it would not be a shock if it is merely a tool to get a stronger negotiating position with Real Madrid bosses as talks continue, but Pepe and Mourinho were close during their spell together in Madrid and he would be a valuable addition for the Red Devils.
Verdict
9/10 – This rumour seems very realistic and could be completed in the summer, when Pepe is able to move for free as his contract in Madrid expires. The Mourinho link is likely to be the key, and he has shown no hesitation in signing ageing stars like Pepe which may put off some other clubs. Keep an eye on this one.
