Portuguese newspaper Record report that Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are vying to secure a transfer to bring Benfica attacking midfielder Gonçalo Guedes to their club. They say that a £26 million move could be completed for the Portuguese youngster within days after his impressive performances for the Liga NOS club, where he plays either as a central striker or attacking midfielder, whilst also having played on the right at times at the Stadium of Light.
What would he bring to Old Trafford?
Direct running and dribbling are the 20-year-old’s strengths and he is certainly capable of picking out a pass. Also more than capable of tracking back and fulfilling a deeper role to help out his teammate when they are on the defensive, the Portugal under 21 international is an all round attacking midfielder who may attract the eye of Jose Mourinho. His unselfish approach sees him set up just as many goals as he scores, with seven goals and seven assists in his 28 appearances in all competitions so far this season.
Is a move likely?
Guedes is being strongly linked with a move away in Portugal, but it’s hard to tell if Old Trafford would be the best place for him. It’s hard to see the youngster going straight into the United first team and he may be tempted to move to Paris, where that is more likely as Unai Emery desperately looks to add goals to his team in Ligue Une. Alternatively, he may wish to stay where he is and continue his development.
5/10 – Long term, he seems to be the kind of player that United should be and are targeting, but it’s hard to see how he would fit into the team right now. United have plenty of options already in his position and would only join a list of other youngsters like Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in struggling for game time.
