Celtic defender Shane Duffy impressed for his country on Wednesday night despite Ireland suffering another UEFA Nations League defeat to Finland away from home – but Ireland supporters applauded the on-loan Celtic man for his goal threat.
Duffy, 28, has been in excellent form since his move from Brighton to Celtic on loan. He has since clocked up seven appearances for the Scottish champions, scoring two goals for Celtic – helping the Hoops keep an impressive five clean sheets.
Ireland have endured a tricky international break – failing to score a single goal in three matches. They suffered a defeat in Euro 2020 play-off qualifying with a penalty-shootout loss to Slovakia, before drawing 0-0 with Wales in the Nations League.
On Wednesday night, Augsburg’s Fredrik Jensen scored the only goal of the game just after the hour mark. Duffy, who wore the Ireland armband once again, earned his 37th cap for his country – having played every single minute of all three games.
Duffy now has to quickly recover ahead of Saturday’s Old Firm derby against Rangers at Parkhead, which is easily the most crucial game of his short Celtic spell so far. A win sees Celtic topple Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
Ireland supporters were clearly frustrated on Twitter after Ireland’s defeat to Finland, but many applauded the £40,000-a-week powerhouse (Spotrac) – with some even claiming he was his country’s only threat in an attacking sense.
