Aston Villa’s Conor Hourihane started for Republic of Ireland on Saturday afternoon – and some international fans on Twitter destroyed him for the quality of his performance.
Ireland recorded a goalless draw away to Georgia in a European Championship group stage qualifier.
Mick McCarthy’s side were fairly resilient defensively, but were unable to create too much going forward in a fairly dull fixture.
Hourihane started in the centre of the park for Ireland, as he earned his 13th senior cap for his nation.
The 28-year-old was unable to create too much when in possession, but did at times put a couple of decent set-pieces into the penalty area.
He’s been in good form for Villa so far this season, scoring four goals in his opening seven games across all competition.
The central midfielder has managed to break into Dean Smith’s side on a regular basis in recent weeks and scored his first Premier League goal in the win over Norwich City, but was unable to transfer their form onto the international stage.
A selection of Ireland supporters on social media ripped into the Villa ace for his international efforts and believe he struggled to make an impact.
The left-footed midfielder certainly wasn’t at his dazzling best, but there wasn’t a lot of movement off the ball from his teammates and it’s no surprise he looks better at club level.
Here are some Ireland fans tearing into Hourihane:
Jeff Hendrick and Conor Hourihane absolutely non-existent in that first half…#IREvGEO

Honestly what does Hourihane give this team… Get him off its time for Jack Byrne… #geoire

Hendricks, Hourihane, McLean have been terrible. Our midfield is not there. If that isnt sorted asap we will be in trouble. This is such a grest chance to qualify and here we are throwing it away.

What shape are Irish midfield playing? Hourihane in particular just running around like a headless chicken, Hendrick looks unfit, need to sort out the shape and start playing some ball here#COYBIG
