Shane Duffy has been forced to watch Ireland’s two 2022 World Cup qualifying matches from the bench this month, but was given a run out in a friendly against Qatar on Tuesday – and Ireland fans were impressed with the Celtic defender.
Duffy, 29, has endured a difficult season having joined Celtic on loan from Premier League club Brighton until the end of the season – with the move initially seen as a coup for Celtic. But his style of play, and lack of pace, has seen him dropped.
The former Everton man has failed to play a single minute in Celtic’s last five league games, even being omitted from the squad for the 1-0 defeat to Ross County – which eventually spelt the end of Neil Lennon. That has seen him drop out of Ireland’s side.
But on Tuesday night, Duffy was given a start against Qatar away from home. He had watched Ireland suffer a 3-2 defeat to Serbia, and then a dismal loss to minnows Luxembourg – practically ruining their chances of 2022 qualification at this stage.
Ireland drew 1-1 with Qatar, as James McClean opened the scoring early on before Qatar pegged Ireland back just after half-time. The pressure grows on Stephen Kenny, but Ireland fans were impressed with Celtic loanee Duffy’s efforts at centre-back.
