Ireland suffered a penalty-shootout defeat to Slovakia on Thursday night in their Euro 2020 play-off clash away from home – and Ireland supporters gave a mixed reaction to Tottenham Hotspur right-back Matt Doherty’s display.

Doherty, 28, started for Stephen Kenny’s Ireland – winning just his 12th cap for Ireland in what was billed as crucial encounter for his country. Ireland had to win to stand any chance of Euro 2020 qualification.

In what was a very equal match, both sides managed just one shot on target throughout the initial 90 minutes as Doherty lined-up alongside Shane Duffy, John Egan and Enda Stevens in defence – in front of Darren Randolph.

That match went to penalties after the two sides failed to break the deadlock throughout the 30 minutes of extra time. Doherty was picked to take a penalty for his country, but failed to hit the back of the net.

Doherty was not the only player to miss for Ireland as Preston’s Alan Browne also failed to convert from 12 yards, while Slovakia hit the back of the net in all four of their penalties. It saw Ireland crash out of Euro 2020 qualification.

Ireland fans discussed Doherty during and after the play-off clash and it was largely a mixed reaction to his performance. Some thought he played well, while others felt he left too many gaps defensively when attacking.
