Matt Doherty produced a superb display for Ireland on Wednesday night as Portugal won – and Ireland fans have applauded the Tottenham star.
Doherty, 29, has endured a tricky 12 months at Tottenham since completing a move from Wolves to Spurs. Last season, he managed just 29 appearances.
His form for Ireland has been questioned, too. In a crucial 2022 World Cup qualifying clash, Doherty was deployed as a left wing-back, wearing no.7.
It was another no.7 that stole the headlines, as Cristiano Ronaldo notched twice to see Portugal win 2-1. He broke the international scoring record.
His goals came after missing a penalty, which was saved by Gavin Bazunu. But Ireland will take plenty of positives from the game, Doherty being one.

What are Ireland fans saying about Tottenham ace Doherty?
It was a very solid performance from Ireland. WhoScored claim Doherty won more aerial headers than any of his teammates – with a huge five.
Not only that, but he won three free-kicks – a joint best with Adam Idah. His four interceptions was second only to Sheffield United defender John Egan.
Five out of his six long balls were accurate, too. An excellent display for a player that is naturally a right-back, not a left wing-back.
Ireland fans have reacted on Twitter to the performance of the Tottenham star – praising the £17million (Guardian) signing for his display.
