Ireland fans criticise Wolves defender Matt Doherty for performance

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty played 90 minutes for Republic of Ireland on Saturday – and some international fans on Twitter ripped into him for his performance.

The 27-year-old played in the European Championship group stage qualifier, as Ireland recored a 0-0 draw away to Georgia.

It was a match short of clear goalscoring opportunities and it leaves Mick McCarthy’s side three points clear at the top of their qualifying group, but others have games in hand on them.

Doherty is a highly-rated right-back that has been a key player during Wolves’ rise to the top-flight and was a real hit in the Premier League last season.

He’s started the new campaign in decent form too and has two goals in his 11 games so far across all competitions.

But the full-back was asked to slot into a more unfamiliar role for Ireland at left-back, with Everton’s Seamus Coleman occupying the right flank.

Doherty had a couple of nervous moments defensively and certainly wasn’t effective going forward, as his weaker left foot was exposed and he didn’t look as dangerous as normal.

He did manage to keep a clean sheet though in the away match and the criticism aimed at him seems a tad harsh.

A selection of Ireland fans on social media singled out the Wolves defender for his display and feel he struggled.
